While the name does say its primary purpose, your heat pump actually helps control the temperature in your home year-round! By using small amounts of energy, the heat pump is able to move heat from one place to another; pulling the heat from the ground or air into your home during the winter, and reversing the process to keep you cool in the summer.
Heat pumps are especially useful because they reduce the number of systems needed in your home by combining heating and cooling processes. Along with this, because your heat pump is moving the heat rather than burning fuel to produce heat, a heat pump is a much more eco-friendly and efficient way of keeping your home comfortable.
Heat pumps will require a back-up heat source when the temperature drops to extreme lows below zero.
Does A Heat Pump Cool as Well as an Air Conditioner?
From the outside, a heat pump and an air conditioner are difficult to tell apart. Both systems use a compressed refrigerant to move the heat from inside your home to the outdoors. The main difference is that your air conditioner is only able to cool, while a heat pump can do both heating and cooling. A heat pump is able to cool as well as an air conditioner, given the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings are equal to each other.
A SEER rating determines how efficiently your system is operating. The higher the rating of your heat pump, the better chance it has at outperforming an air conditioner.
